The Final Solution Is Life

Memoirs of Rubin, who relates her own experiences in the Holocaust as well as those of her husband and other members of their hasidic family. Rubin (nee Teitelbaum-Horowitz) was born in the 1920s in Sighet and raised in Szollos, Ruthenia (now Vinohradiv, Ukraine). In June 1944, soon after her marriage, she and her family were deported to Auschwitz. Her father was murdered in 1941 in a massacre at Kamenetz-Podolsk; her mother was gassed on arrival at Auschwitz. Rubin was sent for a short time to the Krotingen labor camp, near Riga, and then to Stutthof. She was taken on a death march, during which she was liberated. She was reunited after the war with her husband, Rabbi Menachem Rubin, who survived Auschwitz working in an armaments factory and was later injured at Ebensee. Like other members of his family, he took great risks to observe religious practices. His two brothers and a sister also survived. Chana Rubin's uncle, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum (the Satmar Rebbe), and his wife Feige, were saved by Rudolf Kasztner.

The Holocaust is frequently depicted in isolation by its historians. Some of them believe that to place it in any kind of comparative context risks diminishing its uniqueness and even detracts from the enormity of the Nazi crime. In reality, such a restricted understanding of "uniqueness" has pulled the Holocaust apart from history and set up barriers to a better understanding of the racial onslaught unleashed within the Third Reich and its conquered territories. Working against the grain of much earlier writing, this innovative new history combines a detailed re-appraisal of the development of the genocide of the Jews, a full consideration of Nazi policies against other population groups, and a comparative analysis of other modern genocides. This book explores the Holocaust as a social process. Although the mass murder of European Jews was essentially the result of political-ideological decisions made by the Nazi state leadership, the events of the Holocaust were also part of a social dynamic. All European societies experienced developments that led to the social exclusion, persecution and murder of the continent’s Jews. This volume therefore questions Raul Hilberg ́s category of the ‘bystander’. In societies where the political order expects citizens to endorse the exclusion of particular groups in the population, there cannot be any completely uninvolved bystanders. Instead, this book examines the multifarious forms of social action and behaviour connected with the Holocaust. It focuses on institutions and persons, helpers, co-perpetrators, facilitators and spectators, beneficiaries and profiteers, as well as Jewish victims and Jewish organisations trying to cope with the dynamics of exclusion and persecution.

Reading the animal text in the landscape of the damned looks at the diverse texts of our everyday world relating to nonhuman animals and examines the meanings we imbibe from them. It describes ways in which we can explore such artefacts, especially from the perspective of groups and individuals with little or no power. This work understands the oppression of nonhuman animals as being part of a spectrum incorporating sexism, racism, xenophobia, economic exploitation and other forms of oppression. The enquiry includes, physical landscapes, the law, women’s rights, history, slavery, language use, economic coercion, farming, animal experimentation and much more. Reading the animal text in the landscape of the damned is an academic work but is accessible, theoretically based but robustly practical and it encourages the reader to take this enquiry further for both themselves and for others.

Amid the variety of human experiences, the comic occupies a distinctive place. It is simultaneously ubiquitous, relative, and fragile. In this book, Peter L.
