The posthumous masterwork by critically acclaimed author, storied publisher, and Viet Nam veteran Juris Jurjevics—the story of two American GI cops caught in the corrupt cauldron of a Vietnamese civil war stoked red hot by revolution. Viet Nam, 1963. A female Viet Cong assassin is trawling the boulevards of Saigon, catching US Army officers off-guard with a single pistol shot, then riding off on the back of a scooter. Although the US military is not officially in combat, sixteen thousand American servicemen are stationed in Viet Nam “advising” the military and government. Among them are Ellsworth Miser and Clovis Robeson, two army investigators who have been tasked with tracking down the daring killer. Set in the besieged capital of a new nation on the eve of the coup that would bring down the Diem regime and launch the Americans into the Viet Nam War, Play the Red Queen is Juris Jurjevics’s capstone contribution to a lifelong literary legacy: a tour-de-force mystery-cum-social history, breathtakingly atmospheric and heartbreakingly alive with the laws and lawlessness of war.

There's a scene in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass in which the Red Queen, having just led a chase with Alice in which neither seems to have moved from the spot where they began, explains to the perplexed girl: "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." Evolutionary biologists have used this scene to illustrate the evolutionary arms race among competing species. William Barnett argues that a similar dynamic is at work when organizations compete, shaping how firms and industries evolve over time. Barnett examines the effects--and unforeseen perils--of competing and winning. He takes a fascinating, in-depth look at two of the most competitive industries--computer manufacturing and commercial banking--and derives some startling conclusions. Organizations that survive competition become stronger competitors--but only in the market contexts in which they succeed. Barnett shows how managers may think their experience will help them thrive in new markets and conditions, when in fact the opposite is likely to be the case. He finds that an organization's competitiveness at any given moment hinges on the organization's historical experience. Through Red Queen competition, weaker competitors fail, or they learn and adapt. This in turn heightens the intensity of competition and further strengthens survivors in an ever-evolving dynamic. Written by a leading organizational theorist, The Red Queen among Organizations challenges the prevailing wisdom about competition, revealing it to be a force that can make--and break--even the most successful organization.

All cities and regions prioritize economic growth for a simple reason: it is essential to wellbeing and progress. But what are the sources of growth? The eminent scholar of innovation Dan Breznitz contends that the answer lies in global supply networks. In Innovation in Real Places, he examines the four stages of production and argues that struggling regions cannot improve their circumstances by imitating tech-centric economies. Rather, they need to developtheir own strengths, and they can do this by focusing on where they best fit in a globalized production system. All cities and localities have certain strengths, and the trick is in recognizing it.

The American economy faces two deep problems: expanding innovation and raising the rate of quality job creation. Both have roots in a neglected problem: the resistance of Legacy economic sectors to innovation. While the U.S. has focused its policies on breakthrough innovations to create new economic frontiers like information technology and biotechnology, most of its economy is locked into Legacy sectors defended by technological/ economic/ political/ social paradigms that block competition from disruptive innovations that could challenge their models. Americans like to build technology "covered wagons" and take them "out west" to open new innovation frontiers; we don't head our wagons "back east" to bring innovation to our Legacy sectors. By failing to do so, the economy misses a major opportunity for innovation, which is the bedrock of U.S. competitiveness and its standard of living. Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors uses a new, unifying conceptual framework to identify the shared features underlying structural obstacles to innovation in major Legacy sectors: energy, air and auto transport, the electric power grid, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, health care delivery and higher education, and develops approaches to understand and transform them. It finds both strengths and obstacles to innovation in the national innovation environments - a new concept that combines the innovation system and the broader innovation context - for a group of Asian and European economies. Manufacturing is a major Legacy sector that presents a particular challenge because it is a critical stage in the innovation process. By increasingly offshoring production, the U.S. is losing important parts of its innovation capacity. "Innovate here, produce here," where the U.S. took all the gains of its strong innovation system at every stage, is being replaced by "innovate here, produce there," which threatens to lead to "produce there, innovate there." To bring innovation to Legacy sectors, authors William Bonvillian and Charles Weiss recommend that policymakers focus on all stages of innovation from research through implementation. They should fill institutional gaps in the innovation system and take measures to address structural obstacles to needed disruptive innovations. In the specific case of advanced manufacturing, the production ecosystem can be recreated to reverse "jobless innovation" and add manufacturing-led innovation to the U.S.'s still-strong, research-oriented innovation system.

Sex is as fascinating to scientists as it is to the rest of us. A vast pool of knowledge, therefore, has been gleaned from research into the nature of sex, from the contentious problem of why the wasteful reproductive process exists at all, to how individuals choose their mates and what traits they find attractive. This fascinating book explores those findings, and their implications for the sexual behaviour of our own species. It uses the Red Queen from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ – who has to run at full speed to stay where she is – as a metaphor for a whole range of sexual behaviours. The book was shortlisted for the 1994 Rhone-Poulenc Prize for Science Books. ‘Animals and plants evolved sex to fend off parasitic infection. Now look where it has got us. Men want BMWs, power and money in order to pair-bond with women who are blonde, youthful and narrow-waisted ... a brilliant examination of the scientific debates on the hows and whys of sex and evolution’ Independent.

A SUSPENSEFUL, THOUGHTFUL, SEXY DEBUT... "A psychological thriller that reveals the Ivory Tower to be a hothouse full of monstrous egos, where bullying thrives long past playground days and 'academic discipline' requires research skills of the detective kind." - Kate Manning, Author of My Notorious Life Sub-Genre Tags: Suspense, Women Sleuths, Romantic Suspense A famous journalism dean is found dead at the bottom of a stairwell. Accident or murder? The police suspect members of the faculty who had engaged in fierce quarrels with the dean-distinguished scholars who were known to attack the dean like brutal schoolyard bullies. When Meredith "Red" Solaris is appointed interim dean, the faculty suspects are furious. Will the beautiful red-haired professor be next? The case detective tries to protect her as he heads the investigation, but incoming threats lead him to believe Red's the next target for death. The Red Queen's Run is the first mystery in a trilogy about campus violence by former university professor, Bourne Morris. Praise for THE RED QUEEN'S RUN: "Touching upon a very real subject, this author offers the perfect formula of suspects, mystery, and a handsome police detective to heat up Red's fire. The frightening part, however, is that the foundation of school violence has become just as angry and backstabbing as the political realm. This is a great read about what goes on behind those academic doors." - Suspense Magazine "Morris has crafted a suspenseful, thoughtful, sexy debut...Her hero, Red Solaris, is vulnerable but tough, complex but straight-shooting, a woman learning how to wield power by remembering what it's like to have little of it. I'll read about her adventures anytime. Long live the Queen " - Christopher Coake, Author of You Came Back "Morris proves herself a masterful storyteller in this compelling debut novel. The Red Queen's Run is compulsive reading as it takes on the ripped-from-the-headlines topic of campus violence. I can't wait to follow its smart new heroine, 'Red' Solaris as this trilogy continues." - Alan Deutschman, Author of Change or Die "Bourne Morris' long career in academia pays dividends to the reader in behind-the-office-door details and drama that bring life to Meredith 'Red' Solaris's dilemma as interim dean to a squabbling groups of cheats and scoundrels. One of them has killed her friend, the former dean, and as the ethics professor - and the ethical backbone of this novel-Red Solaris is compelling as she stumbles through her new role and toward the truth." - Lori Rader-Day, Author of The Black Hour "A racy and delightful peek into academia's darker corners. Bourne Morris clearly knows this microcosm as well as anyone, and lucky for us, she also knows how to turn a phrase, twist a plot and spin one hell of a yarn." - Ben Rogers, Author of The Flamer "This first mystery in a trilogy by Bourne Morris, an academic herself, is more biting than comedic. Dean Solaris, the eponymous 'Red Queen, ' is a well-developed character who should go the distance in a trilogy. Other characters ring true as well, and the evolving romantic interest is particularly well-done." - Heather Hardy, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, University of Nevada, Reno Books in the Meredith Solaris Mystery Series: THE RED QUEEN'S RUN #1 Part of the Henery Press Mystery Series Collection, if you like one, you'll probably like them all...

This book considers: how innovation through technological change is transforming the service sector; how changing consumer needs and behaviors are forcing firms to alter operations; how firms need competitive strategies and new modes of implementation to respond to this changing landscape; and how public policy will need to adapt.
