“The historian,” wrote E. L. Doctorow, “will tell you what happened. The novelist will tell you what it felt like.” This book sees Peter Hennessy and Robert Shepard combine both approaches with the art of the interviewer, a craft at once sensitive and probing. Reflections collects transcripts of the best interviews from the BBC Radio 4 series Reflections with Peter Hennessy, a show on which the British political elite have spoken candidly about their careers and the moments that came to define their political lives. Supplementing the interviews are short biographies and profiles of the interviewees, allowing readers a fuller picture of each speaker’s background and professional trajectory. This revealing book includes conversations with political heavyweights such as former prime minister John Major; former foreign secretaries Margaret Beckett, David Owen, and Jack Straw; Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock; Liberal Party leader David Steel; and chancellor of exchequer Nigel Lawson. In addition, Reflections presents interviews with leading women, including Shirley Williams and Clare Short, who spent years at the forefront of their parties in Westminster. The latest volume in the popular Haus Curiosities series, Reflections offers valuable insights from some of today’s most influential political figures.

This book is written for those among us who have weathered life’s storms, yet sense a nagging emptiness in their spiritual well-being. Lenten Reflections: From the Desert to the Resurrection is written for those of us who want to be more spiritual. It is divided into four parts. Part One sets the framework for a treatment of the study of our salvation. It is devoted to the historical roots of Lent, its purpose, and its theology. To that end, this section also provides the reader with an overview of the creation story, a discussion of evil and sin, and a summary of the Trinity and the incarnation. Part Two sets the stage for an initial reflection on Lent, while Part Three introduces the disciplines needed to successfully pass through the desert to spiritual wholeness. Four seminal questions are posed: Where are we? What are we? Who are we? Why are we? Answers to these questions set the stage for what many spiritual masters call the purgative way, in which the Twelve-Step Program of Alcoholic Anonymous is suggested as a framework to one’s first steps into spiritual wholeness. At some point in their spiritual journey, the reader moves into what these same spiritual masters call the illuminative and unitive ways. Part Four is entitled “The Agony and Exultation.” Here, we join Jesus on the road to Calvary, where he is crucified. We know a mysterious joy as he rises from the tomb. We end our reflections with his departure from his disciples, the coming of the Paraclete, and a new understanding of the meaning behind Jesus’ sacrifice and life on earth.

Throughout his long, hectic and astonishingly varied life, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) would jot down his passing thoughts on theatre programmes, visiting cards, draft manuscripts and even bills ... Goethe was probably the last true ‘Renaissance Man’. Although employed as a Privy Councillor at the Duke of Weimar’s court, where he helped oversee major mining, road-building and irrigation projects, he also painted, directed plays, carried out research in anatomy, botany and optics – and still found time to produce masterpieces in every literary genre. His fourteen hundred Maxims and Reflections reveal some of his deepest thought on art, ethics, literature and natural science, but also his immediate reactions to books, chance encounters or his administrative work. Although variable in quality, the vast majority have a freshness and immediacy which vividly conjure up Goethe the man. They make an ideal introduction to one of the greatest of European writers.

The title of this book, Very Short Reflections--for Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter, Ordinary Time and Saints--through the Liturgical Year, accurately describes its contents. Chapter 1 presents a short reflection for every day of the Advent Season. Chapter 2 does the same for every day of the Christmas season. Lent is covered in chapter 3, the Sacred Paschal Triduum in chapter 4, and the fifty days of the Easter season in chapter 5. Chapter 6 covers Ordinary Time. And chapter 7 presents a short reflection for every solemnity, feast, and memorial of saints, whose special day falls during the liturgical year. The short reflections are based on sets of Mass texts--Entrance Antiphon, Collect, Prayer over the Offerings, Preface, Communion Antiphon, Prayer after Communion, and Prayer over the People--presented for every day of Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter, Ordinary Time and saints in The Roman Missal. The reflection identifies the theme of the day and presents how it is manifested in the Mass texts. These very short reflections are designed to expose to the reader the liturgical spirituality that emanates from the Mass texts.

This book discusses aspects of the theory and practice of qualitative research in the specific context of language and literacy education. It addresses epistemological perspectives, methodological problems, and practical considerations related to research involvements in areas of language education and literacy studies rather than generic issues of other fields of social sciences. The volume starts with Theoretical Considerations in the first part and raises some epistemological and theoretical concerns that are rarely debated in the specific context of research on language and literacy teaching. The second part, Methodological Approaches explores issues of the design and implementation of language and literacy education research within the framework of some of the major established qualitative research traditions. Finally, the part on Research in Action discusses practical aspects of a few actual instances of qualitative research on language and literacy education in different contexts.

In her breezy, optimistic voice, Rosalind Starrels Greenwald selects vivid memories from her century of life, such as when her Philadelphia home was wired for electricity, how the new Frigidaire replaced the icebox, and how she and her family and friends gathered around the RCA radio and the Victrola. Greenwald celebrates the memory of her husband of fifty-three years, Louis Greenwald, a dental surgeon and Army officer who served overseas in World War II, In search of new surroundings during those lonely, unfamiliar years, Greenwald brought her infant daughter to idyllic Miami Beach, where she discovered her love of South Florida, and what became her lifelong joy of living near the sea. Today, at her home in an upscale retirement community in sunny Pompano Beach, Florida, Greenwald enjoys the company of dear friends, a new family that shares similar memories of long lives well-lived. Greenwald's Victrola and RCA radio are now distant memories, but today she embraces twenty-first century communications, including face-to-face computer chats with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Greenwald recounts her love of travel, from camping with her husband and their son and daughter in coastal Maine and Massachusetts, to jet travel where she toured Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. You will be delighted by Greenwald's joy and pride and enthusiasm for meeting new people, discovering new foods, and seeing the beauty the world offers near and far. This treasure of a book will inspire and charm readers of all ages-children, teens, middle-aged folks, and young-minded "senior citizens" in their sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, and yes, even those into their one-hundreds. Rosalind Starrels Greenwald acknowledges that longevity involves difficult losses, but life is for the living, and each day can be filled with wonder, adventure, learning, creativity, discovery, family, friendship and love.

This autobiography discusses the author's childhood, his entrance into politics, and his attempts, to prevent legislators from becoming lobbyists immediately upon leaving the Legislature and prevent government bureaucrats from being enriched by businesses they regulate, license, inspect, or oversee as a government official. The book discloses the shocking details of elected officials, voting for their own personal financial interests, and opposing efforts to strengthen campaign finance laws, financial disclosure rules and restrictions on lobbyist gift giving. Eight states flunked the 2012 Center for Public Integrity assessment of transparency, accountability and anti-corruption mechanisms. Not a single state received an A grade, and only five earned a B grade. Wyoming ranked 48th out of all 50 States. The risk for government corruption in the states is a nationwide epidemic, mirroring the cronyism and perversion at the federal level, yet politicians and their special interests and supporters vehemently deny its existence. The book reveals details of the successful strategy in a gubernatorial political campaign that produced a winner in spite of the fact that his party's registered voters were outnumbered by 2.5 to 1. What did they do? How did they do it? Can the strategy be applied in other campaigns? Conflicts of interest Influence peddling Cronyism Unethical behavior Acceptance of gifts and favors Graft and corruption

Using his etchings and paintings as a "visual diary," the author takes the reader on a journey revealing his motivations and personal experiences at the time the work was produced. The paintings and etchings are illustrated in full colour, and span a period of little more than thirty years, (1975 to 2009). Interspersed between the illustrations are essays on Oils, Perspective, Pigments, Photography etc., which describe various discoveries and innovations that have affected the way artists express themselves. In the preface, Robin Wall traces scientific developments over the last two hundred years that have profoundly altered the way we think about ourselves and our relationship to the universe. He argues that this paradigm shift should be a strong motivation for artists of all stripes, and could result in a new form of Romanticism. In this regard he examines the original Romantic movement and what he sees as a far sighted vision amongst some of its members.
