How the occupation of a watch factory became one of the iconic labor struggles after May 1968 In 1973, faced with massive layoffs, workers at the legendary Lip watch firm in Besançon, France, occupied their factory to demand that no one lose their job. They seized watches and watch parts, assembled and sold watches, and paid their own salaries. Their actions recaptured the ideals of May 1968, when 11 million workers had gone on strike to demand greater autonomy and to overturn the status quo. Educated by ’68, the men and women at the Besançon factory formed committees to control every aspect of what became a national struggle. Female employees developed a working-class feminism, combating workplace sexual harassment and male control of the union. The endurance of the Lip movement and its appeal through the 1970s came from its rich democratic, participatory culture. The factory workers welcomed supporters and engaged with them, an expression of solidarity between blue-collar and student activists that built on the legacy of 1968. Opening the Gates: The Lip Affair, 1968–1981 is the first account of all facets of the experience, drawing extensively on unpublished materials to reconstruct the vision and practice of those involved. The Lip workers’ struggle was the last widespread expression in France of the belief that creativity and moral autonomy are the driving force of social transformation. It brought about what Sartre called “the extension of the field of possibilities”—not just for workers, but for all those who gave the movement support and meaning.

The first three stories of the Von Star System, and the many fantastical worlds contained within. Worlds of magic, worlds of science, worlds of imagination, worlds dwelling at the crossroads of time. In "Dark Gatekeeper: Endings and Beginnings", a weary traveler finally reaches the Dark Gate. This mysterious Gate serves as the boundary between the known and the unknown. The one who watches over this Gate challenges the traveler. Does the wandering one seek the end of the story? Or the beginning of a new one? In "Gatekeeper Lecata: Rising Tide", a forensic scientist leads a comfortable life within a cutting-edge research laboratory. That is, until one minor discovery sends her entire world into a tailspin. As the danger rises and time runs short, Ophelia Ulliard finds herself on the run from alien forces that want her and her loved ones dead. But, why are the aliens willing to destroy her entire lab just to get to her? And what does this all have to do with the unknown crystal she was given so many years ago? In "Gatekeeper Trimas: Breaking Away", a high school Senior struggles with navigating social cliques, crushes, and the impending graduation. While most would look forward to this as their transition into adulthood, for Brittany Thornton, it's a never-ending nightmare. On the world of Trimas, graduation means moving into a phase of life where all is pre-determined. Whom you'll marry, what job you'll have, and where you'll live. That is the way of the Eternal Masquerade. A way of life Brittany wants nothing to do with. As the clock ticks to her confinement, Brittany must choose to surrender to the will of others, or defy them and fight for a life of freedom. This book also includes a prelude to the next story, "A Distant Thunder". As situations intensify on Lecata and Trimas, a whispered prayer is made to an ancient God. The answer, is a bolt of lightning and the return of a God's favorite servant. What will happen when all of these forces collide? Only one thing is for certain, everything is about to change.

Ivy League schools on average reject some 90 percent of applicants. But there is another way to get into the top colleges in the United States—the back gate—that will still see motivated students come out the front gate with an Ivy League diploma. This book is the plan B that offers you an alternative set of keys to seven of the Ivy League universities: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Pennsylvania (Penn), and Brown. Also covered are the so-called second tier of elite universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Duke, Northwestern, and University of Virginia, among others, which have highly selective admission requirements and confer social and economic benefits on par with the traditional Ivy Leagues. From extension schools to special programs for working students to online studies, the range of back gateways is remarkable for leveling the field for students of all stripes. This book provides the little-known strategies to help you succeed in enrolling in the school of your dreams.

From Babylon?s Ashes, Freedom for the JewsYahweh had promised a deliverer. The gates of Babylon would be opened, and His people would be free. Times had changed since King Nebuchadnezzar?s reign. Babylon was immersed in political turmoil. A series of ill-fated kings had fought for possession of the throne. Finally Nabonidus, the son-in-law of Nebuchadnezzar, had been crowned king, but he soon deserted his throne to conquer Arabia and left his wicked son, Belshazzar, to rule in his place.Although Belshazzar had seen his insane grandfather miraculously restored to health, he refused to admit that it was Yahweh who had humbled the proud king. Power-hungry, but incompetent and hated by his subjects, he neglected the city and mistreated the citizens of the empire, especially the Jews. One fateful night the great Medo-Persian army marched on Babylon and forever altered the course of history. King Nebuchadnezzar?s own dream had foretold the overthrow of Babylon by another empire. But no one could have dreamed that his own grandson would be the cause.

All Gates Open presents the definitive story of arguably the most influential and revered avant-garde band of the late twentieth century: CAN. It consists of two books. In Book One, Rob Young gives us the full biography of a band that emerged at the vanguard of what would come to be called the Krautrock scene in late sixties Cologne. With Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay - two classically trained students of Stockhausen - at the heart of the band, CAN's studio and live performances burned an incendiary trail through the decade that followed: and left a legacy that is still reverberating today in hip hop, post rock, ambient, and countless other genres. Rob Young's account draws on unique interviews with all founding members of CAN, as well as their vocalists, friends and music industry associates. And he revisits the music, which is still deliriously innovative and unclassifiable more than four decades on. All Gates Open is a portrait of a group who worked with visionary intensity and belief, outside the system and inside their own inner space. Book Two, Can Kiosk, has been assembled by Irmin Schmidt, founding member and guiding spirit of the band, as a 'collage - a technique long associated with CAN's approach to recording. There is an oral history of the band drawing on interviews that Irmin made with musicians who see CAN as an influence - such as Bobby Gillespie, Geoff Barrow, Daniel Miller, and many others. There are also interviews with artists and filmmakers like Wim Wenders and John Malkovitch, where Schmidt reflects on more personal matters and his work with film. Extracts of Schmidt's notebook and diaries from 2013-14 are also reproduced as a reflection on the creative process, and the memories, dreams, and epiphanies it entails. Can Kiosk offers further perspectives on a band that have inspired several generations of musicians and filmmakers in the voices of the artists themselves. CAN were unique, and their legacy is articulated in two books in this volume with the depth, rigour, originality, and intensity associated with the band itself. It is illustrated throughout with previously unseen art, photographs, and ephemera from the band's archive.
