A fascinating case for the identity of Shakespeare’s beautiful young man SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS ARE indisputably the most enigmatic and enduring love poems written in English. They also may be the most often argued-over sequence of love poems in any language. But what is it that continues to elude us? While it is in part the spellbinding incantations, the hide-and-seek of sound and meaning, it is also the mystery of the noble youth to whom Shakespeare makes a promise—the promise that the youth will survive in the breath and speech and minds of all those who read these sonnets. “How can such promises be fulfilled if no name is actually given?” Elaine Scarry asks. This book is the answer. Naming Thy Name lays bare William Shakespeare’s devotion to a beloved whom he not only names but names repeatedly in the microtexture of the sonnets, in their architecture, and in their deep fabric, immortalizing a love affair. By naming his name, Scarry enables us to hear clearly, for the very first time, a lover’s call and the beloved’s response. Here, over the course of many poems, are two poets in conversation, in love, speaking and listening, writing and writing back. In a true work of alchemy, Scarry, one of America’s most innovative and passionate thinkers, brilliantly synthesizes textual analysis, literary criticism, and historiography in pursuit of the haunting call and recall of Shakespeare’s verse and that of his (now at last named) beloved friend.

Proceeding from Josef A. Jungmanns groundbreaking book of the same title, this volume gathers new work from fifteen renowned scholars on christological and trinitarian themes in prayer and worship. Eastern and Western traditions, Catholic and Protestant, ancient and contemporary are all represented in this record of the 2005 meeting of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Collectively, these practitioners and theologians, from their varied settings, grapple with the competing ideas and expressions of christological and trinitarian doctrine in meaningful liturgy.

On the surface, naming is simply a way to classify people and their environments. The premise of this study is that it is much more -- a form of social control, a political activity, a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Governments legislate and regulate naming; people fight to take, keep, or change their names. A name change can indicate subjugation or liberation, depending on the circumstances. But it always signifies a change in power relations. Since the late 1970s, the author has looked at naming and renaming, cross-culturally and internationally, with particular attention to the effects of colonisation and liberation. The experience of Inuit in Canada is an example of both. Colonisation is only part of the Nunavut experience. Contrary to the dire predictions of cultural genocide theorists, Inuit culture -- particularly traditional naming -- has remained extremely strong, and is in the midst of a renaissance. Here is a ground-breaking study by the founder of the discipline of political onomastics.

Shakespeare’s Verbal Art is a profoundly important study of the newly rediscovered anagrams that lie hidden below the surface of all Shakespearean texts. It explains the essential role played by these concealed figures in Classical and Renaissance poetry, demonstrating the revelatory function of anagram by reference to the close analysis of a wide range of examples. Special attention is given to Shakespeare’s use of these sub-textual devices to clarify meaning and intention. The focus is first on Shake-speares Sonnets of 1609, and secondly on Hamlet, Othello and Twelfth Night, all of which are found to be composed around the concealed anagrams that render these works self-interpreting. A new kind of language use is revealed, in terms of which pre-Enlightenment text is envisaged as existing in two distinct dimensions – the overt and the covert – both of which must be read if any particular poem or play is to be fully understood. In effect, a wholly new set of Shakespearean texts is made available to the reader, who will find Shakespeare’s Verbal Art an essential guide to the new discoveries. The book will also be indispensable in the fields of Classical and Renaissance literature, linguistics, poetics, rhetoric, and literary history, and in relation to the pre-Enlightenment text in general, and will interest both the specialist and the general reader.
