A review of ground shock data from recent large, near-surface high-explosive tests is made. Emphasis is on close-in motions in rock. Wave forms are shown for selected shots and locations. Comparisons are made among wave forms for similar test conditions in different geologic materials including soil, shale, granite, and sandstone. Variations in peak motion amplitudes at various depths and ranges are discussed for the different geologic materials. (Author).

You have to assist your little chemists when conducting the experiments listed in this book. Experiments are powerful learning tools that help to define your child’s love for acquiring information hands-on. Anything learned with the senses involved will be a lot more difficult to forget than those learned simply by reading. Good luck on these experiments!

Containing papers presented at the seventeenth in a series of biennial meetings organised by the Wessex Institute and first held in 1984, this book includes the latest research from scientists who perform experiments, researchers who develop computer codes, and those who carry out measurements on prototypes and whose work may interact. Progress in the engineering sciences is dependent on the orderly and concurrent development of all three fields. Continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with diminishing costs and rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to be certain of their reliability, i.e. to validate their results. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the exploitation of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data. The papers contained in the book address advances in the interaction between these three areas. They cover such topics as: Computational and Experimental Methods; Fluid Flow; Structural and Stress Analysis; Materials Characterisation; Heat Transfer and Thermal Processes; Advances in Computational Methods; Automotive Applications; Applications in Industry; Process Simulations; Environmental Modelling and Applications; Computer Modelling; Validation of Computer Modelling; Computation in Measurements; Data Processing of Experiments; Virtual Testing and Verification; Simulation and Forecasting; Measurements in Engineering.

In the course of developing the capability of predicting the characteristics of water waves generated by explosions detonated in shallow water beneath the ocean floor, the pertinent data from past experiments were analysed using dimensional analysis as a framework. Data were examined from one series of high explosive cratering experiments detonated beneath the floor in shallow water, and from two series of high explosive experiments and one nuclear explosive experiment detonated above the floor in shallow water. The data indicate that the maximum radius of the water column produced by the explosion is proportional to the cube root of the ratio of explosive yield to ambient pressure at the point of detonation. Further, the data show that the maximum radius of the column of water is proportional to the square root of the product of wave height and distance from the source. The conclusions of this scheme of analysis are being tested with hydrodynamic computer code calculations.

Explosion Blast Response of Composites contains key information on the effects of explosions, shock waves, and detonation products (e.g. fragments, shrapnel) on the deformation and damage to composites. The book considers the blast response of laminates and sandwich composites, along with blast mitigation of composites (including coating systems and energy absorbing materials). Broken down under the following key themes: Introduction to explosive blast response of composites, Air explosion blast response of composites, Underwater explosion blast response of composites, and High strain rate and dynamic properties of composites, the book deals with an important and contemporary topic due to the extensive use of composites in applications where explosive blasts are an ever-present threat, such as military aircraft, armoured vehicles, naval ships and submarines, body armour, and other defense applications. In addition, the growing use of IEDs and other types of bombs used by terrorists to attack civilian and military targets highlights the need for this book. Many terrorist attacks occur in subways, trains, buses, aircraft, buildings, and other civil infrastructure made of composite materials. Designers, engineers and terrorist experts need the essential information to protect civilians, military personnel, and assets from explosive blasts. Focuses on key aspects, including both modeling, analysis, and experimental work Written by leading international experts from academia, defense agencies, and other organizations Timely book due to the extensive use of composites in areas where explosive blasts are an ever-present threat in military applications
