A loveable local legend and true character to all who knew him, Copper was no ordinary dog. With more stories to tell than you could count on the pads of one paw, this curly-tailed, shaggy-bearded mongrel (but don't let him hear you call him that) led a truly astonishing life. Famed for his remarkable wanderlust, canine curiosity took him all over the place, from Richmond and Kingston to Brighton, sometimes travelling on buses with his friend Jessie the cat, often stopping off at his favourite pubs, or chasing unsuspecting joggers in the park - a hobby which nearly ended his life. In this delightful book, Copper tells us of his astounding adventures with the finest of tail-wagging wisdom. He sniffs out all the important things in life: the comings and goings, the loves and losses - and, of course, what it's like to live in high society. Sometimes cheeky, most of the time charming, but always cherished, Copper's story is by turns funny and moving, the tale of a real canine hero.

Excess minerals in the diet and water of animals can have an adverse effect on animal health, consumers, and the environment. Preventing unsafe mineral exposure is a fundamental part of animal nutrition and management. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration, the National Academies convened a committee to make recommendations on animal tolerances and toxic dietary levels, updating a 1980 report on mineral tolerance in domestic animals. Based on a review of current scientific data and information, the report sets a "maximum tolerable level" (MTL) for each mineral as it applies to the diets of farm animals, poultry, and fish. The report includes an analysis of the effects of toxic levels in animal diets, and it identifies elements that pose potential human health concerns. The report recommends research that includes a better characterization of animal exposure to minerals through feedstuffs; a better understanding of the relationship between mineral concentrations in feed and water and the levels in consumer products such as meat, milk, and eggs; and more research on the maximum tolerable level of minerals for aquatic and companion animals.

Weapons create power, and better weapons create even better power. In this sweeping story of the lives of Chief Copper Stone and his son, White Pine, the chief’s discovery of copper gives his tribe superior arrows, knives, and tools. The source of his copper becomes a secret that must be defended, even against those he should be able to trust most. Others are envious of their good fortune, and crave the opportunity to seize it—and the power it commands—for themselves. After tragedy strikes, Chief Copper Stone attempts to regain peace for his tribe, but he soon discovers that peace is difficult when so many of those around him want war. The corrupting forces of revenge and hunger for power make his task doubly difficult. To what lengths will Chief Copper Stone and his family have to go to overcome the adversity that dogs their steps?
