Excerpt from Field, Laboratory, and Library Manual in Physical Geography In offering this manual to the public the author wishes to express the hope that it may prove helpful to his fellow-teach ers, and that teachers and pupils alike may get from it at least a portion of the pleasure that he has taken in working out its exercises. The manual consists of readings and exercises selected from those which he has used in his own classes in the high school. He hopes that they may be of value in guiding others in their first attempts at scientific investigation and research. Physical geography gives the student a broader outlook than any other science in the curriculum of secondary schools. It is a proper culmination of the nature study of the grammar school, and an appropriate introduction to the more technical and rigid sciences of the high school. Its value arises in part from the fact that it touches nature in so many places. Its many sidedness and its alluring bypaths have tempted pupil and teacher alike. The requirements of candidates preparing for the Cambridge Senior Local Examination in Physical Geography have been specially kept in view, and the book covers also all that part of the syllabus of the Oxford Senior Local Examination which refers to Physical Geography in the strict sense, as well as the physical part of the syllabus in geography for the London Matriculation, and examinations of similar scope. Among the special features are the large number of diagrams and simple sketch-maps, intended not only to illustrate particular problems, but also to serve as a guide to teachers and scholars in the construction of other similar maps and diagrams. Further, as there is now general agreement that physical geography can only be regarded as coming legitimately under the scope of school geography when the phenomena described are considered in their relation to human life and activities, this aspect of the subject has been carefully kept in view, and references have been given to facilitate further work by teacher and scholar in this direction. Excerpt from Laboratory and Field, Exercises in Physical Geography Physical Geography has at last come to take its place among the other sciences as a subject which requires laboratory and field work for its highest development. The reasons for the introduction of laboratory methods in this subject are the same as those which demand its use in the other sciences, namely, the training which the pupil receives in the laboratory and the additional light thrown upon the subjects discussed in the class room. As Physical Geography is so generally assigned a place in the first year of the high-school course, it is of special importance that this first science should be so taught as to inculcate scientific methods of study. But while the need of laboratory work is universally recognized by the leading educators, this adjunct has not yet found its way into the methods of the majority of our secondary schools. The causes we need not go far to seek. This newer feature of laboratory work in Physical Geography has been introduced in such comparatively recent years that there has not yet been sufficient time for schools and teachers to adapt themselves to the changed conditions. This is simply a repetition of what has happened in the development of the other sciences.
