Excerpt from American Journal of Conchology, Vol. 4 Shell oval or oblong, generally of a dark brown or chocolate color, with a more or less long and narrow aperture, the lip of which is generally toothed within, not umbilicate; not operou late. Animal amphibious; furnished with two tentacula, with eyes at their bases. Remarks. Although air-breathers, these animals require a large amount of moisture, and are generally found on the sea shore, in places covered by high tides. Both in the character of the animal and in that of the shell, they much resemble the fresh water pulmonifera, which they seem to. Connect with the strictly terrestrial species. Excerpt from American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 73: November, 1901 I have no doubt that a good many of you present have read an account of adrenalin, and some of you no doubt have used it. Inasmuch as, however, this is the first time the active principle of the suprarenal glands was isolated in a commercial scale, and such might lead to the isolation of the active principle of other interest ing glands, I venture to submit before you a brief sketch as far as investigation has gone. Excerpt from The Nautilus, Vol. 3: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Interests of Conchologists; May, 1889, to April, 1890 HE publishers of the nautilus feel that no explanation of their object in offering this journal to the scientific public is necessary. The need of an American publication devoted especially to the interests of Conchologists is felt throughout the country. One of the greatest difficulties which the student of science has to overcome is found in the scattered and fragmentary character of scientific literature. The Proceedings or Transactions of a hundred societies, and the pages of innumerable journals must be searched through before one can be certain that a given fact or observation has or has not been recorded. The Simplest way to better this condition of things will be to limit by some means the number of publications in which a certain subject is likely to be treated upon; and this is most easily done by establishing journals devoted to special branches of science. It is the aim of the nautilus to afford such a medium for all who are interested in studying the Mollusca and to this end the co-operation of all friends of science is solicited. Excerpt from The Nautilus, Vol. 46: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Interests of Conchologists; July, 1932 to April, 1933 The classical collecting ground for American fossils in the Calvert formation at Plum Point on Chesapeake Bay was visited and explored on Saturday, followed by the Annual Dinner in the evening. The concluding address was given here by Dr. Cloyd H. Marvin, President of George Washington University, who exhibited some unusual films of undersea life in the West Indies. Some of these were in color and were made by Dr. Marvin last summer when he accompanied Dr. Bartsch on his collecting trip to these seas. Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Volume 43 is Part Two of a dictionary of authors-from Hans Vilhelm Kaalund to Ulrich Zwingli-that serves as a handy, condensed reference to the authors quoted in the first 40 volumes, as well as a guide to thousands more authors whose works are notable but not featured in this set.
